Looking at these tattered banners now hanging in museums and knowing that half a million people died under these threadbare and bloodstained pieces of cloth so we could be free...it just makes you either very proud or very sad to be an American.

One of the most uplifting and inspiring songs I ever heard...
Being a Civil War reenactor and having actually worn the wool uniform,
carried a ten-pound musket, and marched on to a field and felt the earth
shaking roar of cannons, choked by the smoke and smell of the
gunpowder, and having fought under some of these flags (20th Maine and
69th NY were in my Brigade)...it's hard not to get choked up hearing
this song.
Looking at these tattered banners now hanging in museums and knowing that half a million people died under these threadbare and bloodstained pieces of cloth so we could be free...it just makes you either very proud or very sad to be an American.
